Vinyasa Yoga is one of the most popular forms of yoga today, due to its athletic and aerobic benefits, as well as fun nature which allows students to move around in a flowing nature, that gives people the experience of being alive, connected and free.
The Sanskrit word Vinyasa comes from “vi” meaning variation, and “nyasa” which means ‘within prescribed parameters.’
In turn this describes exactly what Vinyasa Yoga encompasses, characterized by a variety of postures which you transition between, seamlessly, using breath as a constant.
As a philosophy, Vinyasa recognizes the temporary nature of things and recognizes this in its style. The temporary nature of postures are a reflection for life, where we stay in them for a while and then leave on to another posture (like the experience of life). Vinyasa represents the life and death cycle, you start in one place (birth), move through different sequences (life) and then reach the end, where you come back to the beginning (rebirth). How you feel and react during these movements is then reflective of your inner state.
Vinyasa in its form, is a breath initiated practice, that connects every action of our life with the intention of moving towards what is sacred, or most important to us, whilst getting back to who we truly are.
Vinyasa is synonymous with “flow” movement. Moving in and out of postures in a flow like manner, staying within postures for a short period of time, and then moving onto the next whilst controlling your breath.
In our Vinyasa Yoga classes, no two classes are exactly the same, where you will move through various sequences, maneuvering through various positions, connecting with your breathe, in order to create flow (or effortless effort). It is also called a “Moving Meditation” however is more known for its higher intensity in moving between the postures in a continuous flow.

Hatha yoga has been practiced for 1000’s of years, as a way for people to reach their highest potential through body and mind integrating exercises. Today it is one of the most popular yoga forms practiced worldwide, due to its ability to be practiced by beginners to advanced yogis alike. Due to its slower nature, and focus on individual postures (asanas) it allows for people to really focus on each individual move, to attain a feeling of ‘yoga’ through these more static positions.
The word “ha” means sun, “ta” means moon. “Hatha” means the Yoga to bring balance between the sun and the moon in you. Hatha Yoga is about exploring ways that will take you beyond your certain perceived limitations, but in essence, it is a physical preparation – preparing the body for higher possibilities.
Hatha Yoga, also means “The yoga of force”, where it is about attaining this ‘yoga’ state through force or direct, purposeful movements or actions. These can include all of the following, making Hatha a great way to be introduced to various gateways and paths of yoga.
A typical Hatha Yoga class can include the following:
- Asana – Yoga Postures
- Pranayama – Breathing Techniques
- Mantra – Chanting or Reciting
- Mudra – Hand Gestures

- Visualization

Yin Yoga provides an alternative to the usual, more intense, fast, muscle provoking yoga that is commonly practiced in many studios across the world (such as Vinyasa, and Ashtanga). Often forgot about is the importance of its equal opposite, Yin Yoga.
Yin Yoga opposes the usual “Yang” side through targeting not significantly your muscles, but instead your deep connective tissues, such as ligaments, joints, and bones! Super important to keep healthy whether you are an athlete, had an injury, or needing some much needed slow movement to reawake the body. It is a much slower, and meditative form of yoga. Because you tend to be in positions longer it allows for you to gain a deep connection to breathe, as well as stretch and lengthen those muscles and tissues. By going deep into poses it allows to unlock any blockages and creating smooth energy flow throughout the body.
Key Benefits of Yin Yoga:
Lengthens connective tissues
Increases Flexibility
Circulation Booster
Reduce Stress

Ashtanga Yoga is the yoga of the “Eight Limbs”. The term was created by an old Indian sage named Patanjali (who wrote The Yoga Sutras), that mentions that we should master eight practices (limbs) in order to go beyond suffering, and come to terms with our true self.
An Ashtanga Yoga practice is dynamic, strength building, structured, challenging, and meditative. Expect to work up a sweat with Ashtanga Yoga, as you move through sequences at your own pace, creating your own awesome flow following the guidelines of Ashtanga. You will be given a set variation of Ashtanga sequences and moves to complete and will vary according to skill level, as you will be guided throughout, and will allow you the chance to move through your practice with freedom and connection. A key different of Ashtanga Yoga is the fact of your practice is mainly yours. Whilst your teacher is there to support and teach you the sequences, the majority of the time is spent with you finding your rhythm and completing the sequence at your own pace.
In this, Ashtanga Yoga is very personalized to each individual, with the instructor there to be of support all along the way. Traditionally yoga was a solo practice, everything would be done at ones own pace, and not done in the group settings we see today (where everyone has to follow the same timing and movement.)
A typical Ashtanga practice would include:
- 5 sun salutation A and 3-5 sun salutation B
- A set of standing postures – including forward folds, twists and balances
- A set of seated postures – including a lot of forward folding, hip opening and twisting. And many of the signature Ashtanga “vinyasas” – jumping back and forward through a flow to keep the heart rate up and to build strength!
- Finishing sequence – including a deep backbend, shoulderstands and headstand
Learn about and evolve beyond the eight limbs of Yoga suggested by Patanjali.
The Eight Limbs of Yoga in Ashtanga include:
- Yamas (behavioural observances; things you SHOULD do)
- Niyamas (behavioural restraints; things you SHOULDN’T do)
- Asana (practice of physical postures)
- Pranayama (practice of breathing techniques to control our life force energy)
- Pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses)
- Dharana (concentration)
- Dhyana (meditation)
- Samadhi (transendance)
So if you are looking for a more individual practice, where you will gain further understanding, knowledge and a hands on approach from your teacher then join our Ashtanga Yoga series.
